Yesterday, Feb. 12, Atlanta got a bit of snow. We got a lot more than anyone expected but nothing compared to other parts of the United States that are under 50 inches of the white stuff.
It was just about 4 inches and plenty to let the kids have a blast. I could tell that Amanda was really cold but she didn't want to go inside and get warm. She kept saying she was fine.
We built a snow man and did a bit of sledding. We quickly figured out we don't have any good hills in the neighborhood but we made due.
Shooting in the snow is always good and bad.
Good as in it is better than rain. For as long as I can remember shooting in the rain is just bad news all around. Snow is so much better. Yes you can get cold and wet, but every once in a while you shake the snow off and keep shooting. Rain doesn't work like that. You are cold and wet and you are never going to get warm or dry unless you stop shooting and go inside.
Shooting in the snow is also bad. Snow is white, really white if the sun is out. All that white is going to give you exposure issues. I would bet all the wedding photographer out there deal with the same issues. You want detail in the white snow so you shoot with a fast shutter speed, but not so much so that everything else goes dark.
